“One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman” – Simone de Beauvoir
I used to ask myself, what is wrong with her?
Why does she fall for the assholes; the cowards; the immature kids.
There must be something wrong in her personality, a real flaw, because she belittles herself and allows these boys to walk all over her. She gives them second chances even after they leave her to sleep with other girls. She smiles and contacts them even after they get bouts of schizophrenia and forget her. She stays by their side patiently, with care, until they decide what it is they want in their lives.
I used to think, she’s stupid and weak and gullible.
But really I should have seen it, she is a prize. She has a heart of gold, so much faith in humans that she makes them better than they are, undeserving or not, she gives them more depth before they even have it. She is affectionate and selfless. She gives love without any prospect or any demand for its return. She is thoughtful and kind, not allowing anyone to feel bad about what they’ve done or how they are.
No Sir, if these things make her weak, and small and stupid and less powerful, then our society is the one that needs to changed. I bow-down-to-her. She will forever be better than you, better than you can ever hope to be. Better in her heart, and our world.
